Kilometer 0 - Manila City

Located along Roxas Boulevard just in front of the Rizal Monument in Luneta Park in the City of Manila, Kilometer 0 is the beginning of every traveler's adventure.

Kilometer 0

Kilometer 0 details

Also called a zero mile marker or control station, Kilometer 0 is usually a particular location (usually placed in the nation's capital city) where distances are traditionally measured. These markers also serve as a starting point when measuring a distance of a specific place. For example, Baguio City in the province of Benguet is located 243.4 kilometers northwest of kilometer 0 in Manila. Some people would even consider the marker as the heart of the Philippines.

The Old Kilometer 0 marker of the Philippines

The Kilometer 0 of the Republic of the Philippines is found just across the street from the Rizal monument. The marker was once made from marble with a silver ball placed on top of it. It was replaced by a better-looking mini-obelisk with an image of the Philippine archipelago painted in gold. When you check out its coordinates in the net, you'd find out that the marker is located in 14°34'52"N 120°58'34" E.

That's Luneta Shrine across the road from the Kilometer 0 marker.

The Kilometer 0 marker reminds me of the famous Millarium Aureum or the Golden Milestone of Rome. As they say "All roads lead to Rome."

My wife posing for the camera

I had the chance to visit the Kilometer 0 marker during Mother's Day this year when my wife and I decided to bring our baby to Luneta Park (actually our real goal was to test our newly purchased stroller).

I was really enthusiastic about having a picture taken beside the Kilometer 0 Marker because I was using it as a reference in my previous blog articles. It would also be better if I blog about it to educate my local and foreign friends about the importance of that specific spot in the Philippines. So if you have time, visit the site and surely, you'll have the right to brag that you've been to the heart of the Philippines!

Kilometer 0 Entrance Fee

It's FREE to visit Kilometer 0.

Kilometer 0 Operating Hours

Kilometer 0 is open 24/7.

Why visit Kilometer 0?

Kilometer 0 might not be your typical tourist destination nor does it offer exciting activities, but it's a great first destination if you're planning to start a year of travels

Getting to Kilometer 0:

The marker is already in Manila, taxis are the best way to reach the spots because buses and jeepneys are prohibited from passing by the road in front of the marker. You could also ride the LRT and board down at United Nations (UN) station. From there walk towards Luneta Park and cross several streets until you reach the Rizal Monument. The Kilometer 0 marker is just across the street from there.
