Naga Metropolitan Cathedral History

Naga Metropolitan Cathedral is also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist or informally as Naga Cathedral. The cathedral was constructed in 1575 but was finished four years later in 1579. It has a Spanish-Romanesque style. It has a high arch entrance with two symmetrical belfries on both sides. The sidewalls, on the other hand, are supported by four massive flying buttresses to counter the effects of earthquakes.

However, despite all these preventive measures, Naga Metropolitan Cathedral still sustained heavy damages in 1856 due to a strong typhoon. It was also heavily damaged during the 1887 earthquake. The cathedral was repaired in 1890 and was restored under the supervision of Fr. San Andres in 1987.

I came to visit Naga Metropolitan Cathedral for the first time during our 2014 Bicol Road Trip. On the first leg of our trip, we stayed in Nagaland Hotel which is just a few meters away from the cathedral. To be honest it was not the facade that caught my attention. It was the Porta Mariae that struck me. It reminded me of the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile in France.

  1. The cathedral is great!
Similar to the famous cathedrals in Europe, but this is the mini version.
The mural art and stained glass i really beautiful.

    But the interesting one is:
There's a structure above The Porta Mariae which resemblance to the all-seeing eye.
