Japan Diaries 4: Week 31
Week 31: May 30 - June 3, 2022
Day 210: May 30, 2022
Monday - Rumoi
Good morning everyone! It's my 31st week here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. For today's "visit school", I'll be reporting to my main school which is Rumoi High School.
Today is the first day of the First Term Interim Exam so I don't have any collab with my JTEs. Hence, I spent my day studying Japanese and writing kanji.
For today's kanji writing practice, I focused on the kanji for water which is 水. I also learned other kanji characters using the water radical like the following:
氷 - kori - ice
永 - ei - eternity
泣 - naku - cry
活 - katsu - live
After work, my family and I headed out for an afternoon walk around Midorigaokacho to 4 Chome Minamimachi before going back home and calling it a day.
Day 211: May 31, 2022
Tuesday - Rumoi
It's the second day of the First Term Interim Exam here at Rumoi High School. Like yesterday, I took the opportunity to study Japanese. This time I focused on the kanji for a person which is 人. I used its radical to learn the following kanji characters:
囚 - shu - prisoner
何 - nani - what
傘 - kasa - an umbrella
Osteria Cibo English Department Party
After work, I headed to Osteria Cibo for the New Teachers Welcome Party / English Department Party. I finally got to talk to the 4 new teachers in the department and got to know them a bit deeper.

An after-party won't be complete without a karaoke |
Gotta love the ambiance of Taiyo |
Our faculty bonding didn't end there. We had a second party at Taiyo where we met the Architecture Department who are also having their department party. It was a night of singing, laughing, and of course drinking. We called it a night at around 11PM as we still had to work the next day. Had it been a Friday for sure we'd all be too drunk to do anything the next day.
Day 212: June 1, 2022
Wednesday - Rumoi
It's the first day of June and it's a rainy day. I'm back at Rumoi High School for the third day of the First Term Interim Exam.
Like yesterday and the day before, I used my "free" time to study Japanese and learn new Kanji characters. Today, I focused on the kanji for the tree which is 木. I used its radical to learn the following kanji characters:
果 - hate - fruit
林 - hayashi - grove
森 - mori - forest
本 - hon - book/origin
Day 213: June 2, 2022
Thursday - Rumoi
Good morning everyone! It's a beautiful sunny day. Today is also the fourth and last day of the First Term Interim Exam in Rumoi High School.
Instead of learning new kanji characters today, I researched the municipalities of Hokkaido Prefecture and found out that there are currently 179 cities, towns, and villages here. This is broken into 35 cities and 144 towns and villages. Although I'm currently completing the #47PrefectureChallenge, I think it wouldn't hurt to start a new challenge which I'll call #Hokkaido35Cities and #Hokkaido179🗾. I'll talk more about this in future articles.
I strolled in Minamimachi with my wife |
Hey, there cute fox! |
Quick grocery in MaxValu |
Bought some yakitori in the Yakitori Ryuho mobile store outside Maxvalu |
In the evening, my wife and I went out on a date. We walked around Minamimachi until MaxValu. From there, we walked back to Chidoricho and had dinner at Ramen Moe.
For the record, this is our first date here in Rumoi City as we're used to having our daughter tag along wherever we go.
Day 214: June 3, 2022
Friday - Tomamae
Today is my 6th visit to Tomamae Commercial High School for the school year 2022-2023. For this trip, I used my 1-day Moekko Free Ticket.
Here's my workload for today:
2nd period - Imaginary Conversation @ Elective of Hasegawa Sensei
3rd period - Demonstrative Pronouns @ 1st year of Hasegawa Sensei
Overall, my lone visit to Tomamae Commercial High School proved to be a timely and enriching experience, especially since I was already missing the classroom environment. However, my four-day "rest and learning" stay at Rumoi High School also played a crucial role in enhancing my Japanese language skills while providing much-needed rest to prevent burnout.
