Hokuryu (北竜町) is a town in the Sorachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name of the town comes from the fact that it is north of the town of Uryu. The kanji used in its name stands for 北 – north and 竜 - dragon.

1. Take a picture of Hokuryu’s unique manhole cover. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is common and can be seen around Hokuryu town proper.

2. Visit the Hokuryu Roadside Station / Roadside Station Sunflower Hokuryu (道の駅 サンフラワー北竜) and buy products that are made from Hokuryu. You can also get the roadside station stamp here for the Hokkaido Stamp rally booklet.

3. Buy and eat the Hokuryu Sunflower Melon. It has a reputation for its high sugar content and excellent taste.

4. Visit the Matatsu Shrine (真龍神社). You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day.

5. Ski at the Hokuryu Choei Hekisui Ski Area (北竜町営碧水スキー場) It is small compared to most ski areas but it is free to use.

6. Stay for the day and camp at the Konpira Park Camping Ground (金比羅公園キャンプ場). If you don’t have a tent, you can rent one of the cabins here. If you visit in spring, you can see the beautiful seasonal scenery such as cherry blossoms, moss phlox, and white birch.

7. Take a dip in the onsen of Sunflower Park Hokuryu Hot Spring (サンフラワーパーク 北竜温泉). It’s connected to the Hokuryu Roadside Station. During winter, the outdoor onsen looks amazing.

8. Visit Sandan Falls (三段の滝) on the far west side of Hokuryu. It is about 10 km upstream of the Etaibetsu Dam and about 5 km from the Mt. Shokanbetsu trailhead (Shokanbetsu Forest Road).

10. See millions of sunflowers in the Hokuryu Sunflower Village during the Hokuryu Sunflower Festival held every mid-July to mid-August.
