Battery Hearn Ruins - Cavite

Found on the island of Corregidor in the province of Cavite, Battery Hearn is a 12- inch Seacoast west-ranged gun, which is also the longest gun on the island. It served as part of the Harbor Defenses of Manila and Subic Bays.

Battery Hearn Ruins History

Formerly known as Smith No. 2 after the Smith Brothers, the manufacturers of a formerly popular brand of cough drops during those days. Battery Hearn was later renamed under General Orders No. 11 in honor of the late Brigadier Clint C. Hearn.

Believe it or not, Battery Hearn is longer than the tranvia

The guns were constructed in September 1918 and were completed in June 1921. The cost of the construction was $148,105.32 which is equivalent to 2 million dollars in today's money.

FYI Battery Hearn is aimed at the province of Bataan

Battery Hearn was used for bombing Japanese positions on Cavite and Bataan. After the fall of Corregidor, the Japanese used American POWs to repair the gun and put them back into action. The gun, however, received a near hit from American aerial bombardment in January 1945 which completely silenced it.

UPDATED 2020

It's FREE to enter and explore Battery Hearn Ruins' vicinity. All you need to do is join the Corregidor Island tour. However, due to the impact of the pandemic on the tourism industry, Sun Cruises Inc. decided to cease the operation of its hotel, cruise, and tour services.

Battery Hearn Ruins Operating Hours

You can visit Battery Hearn Ruins 24/7. However, it is highly advisable not to visit at night as the area is not well lit.

Why visit Battery Hearn Ruins?

Battery Hearn Ruins is probably the most famous among all the gun emplacements in Corregidor Island. It's highly recommended that you and your friends have your own "banzai" photo here.

Getting to Battery Hearn Ruins:

Unless you hire a yacht (which is very expensive) or go to Bataan and rent a fishing boat to bring you to the island (which is tiring if you're from Manila), there is no other way to get to the island but through Sun Cruises.

Sun Cruises dominated, or let me say captured the tourism market for Corregidor. The good thing about it is that they have daily trips to the island.
