National Shrine of St. Padre Pio History
The shrine initially started out as a bamboo and nipa chapel back in 2003. Then on November 7, 2005, a 1.6-hectare agricultural land was donated to the Archdiocese of Lipa by a generous couple. A year later, another generous individual donated 200 square meters of land to provide the right of way to the site. This land would be the site of the new chapel and later on the Shrine of St. Padre Pio.

Holy Week brings in thousands of pilgrims |
Construction of the new chapel in the new site started in 2009. In the next few years, other structures were built in the site like the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, Chapel of Saints, the belfry, the parish rectory, the Sanctuary of the True Cross of Christ, and the St. John Marie Vianney Chapel of Reconciliation.

The Shrine of St. Padre Pio received two important relics of St. Padre Pio in 2010. In the same year, the shrine was declared as one of the pilgrimage churches of the Archdiocese of Lipa during its Centennial Year. Then on September 14, 2015, it was declared as the National Shrine of St. Padre Pio.

The church and most, if not all, of the infrastructures in the shrine vicinity, were built following a Filipino-inspired design. Its main materials were wood, bamboo, stone, and sasa (a type of bamboo). Looking at the church from a distance or from the top of the belfry, you'd notice that it looks like a giant salakot. A salakot is a native headwear that is worn by farmers and fishermen to protect them from the harsh effects of nature. The salakot also stands as a symbol of the Filipino identity.

I got to visit the National Shrine of St. Padre Pio with my family during our Batangas - Quezon 2017 Visita Iglesia. It was the first church/shrine in our list. Just a heads up, if you're heading there during the Holy Week, expect heavy traffic. Try to arrive early so that you'd get to avoid this. There are homes offering paid parking but the shrine has a very wide parking space that could probably fit 100 vehicles.

Padre Pio Shrine Mass Schedule
|
National Shrine of St. Padre Pio Admission Fee:
Although the National Shrine of St. Padre Pio is generally FREE to visit, some parts of it require an entrance fee to access like the museum that charges 20 pesos. However, you'd only see photos of St. Padre Pio there. There are also some reports about people pretending to be affiliated to the shrine charging 50 - 80 pesos for visitors with vehicles trying to park in the shrine's parking area.
National Shrine of St. Padre Pio Opening Hours:
Padre Pio Shrine is generally open 24 hours every day. However, for the mass schedule, you may want to check out the mass schedule above.
Why visit the National Shrine of St. Padre Pio?
The National Shrine of St. Padre Pio should be included in your pilgrimage sites to visit in Batangas. The place is perfect not only for religious people but for nature lovers as well. It's a pilgrimage worth taking.
Getting to the National Shrine of Padre Pio:
From Pasay City in Manila, ride a bus going to Lucena City. Tell the conductor to drop you off at Barangay San Pedro in Sto. Tomas, Batangas. To be exact, tell the conductor to drop you off the bus stop nearest Padre Pio National Shrine (He knows that quite well as many pilgrims go there). Once there, ride a tricycle going to the National Shrine of St. Padre Pio.
