Located in Nishimuro District in the town of Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture, Senjojiki (千畳敷) is the name given to the multi-tiered rock formations in the southwestern coast of the town.

Senjojiki Details
The name Senjojiki literally translates to "thousand tatami mats", a name that probably tries to describe the picturesque rock formations on the coast which to an imaginative mind really does look like thousands of interwoven tatami mats.

Here's what you should know... |
Senjojiki is a great alternative destination if Shirarahama Beach turns out to be crowded. Although not as popular and well-promoted as Shirahama Beach, Senjojiki offers visitors Instagram-worthy spots, and best of all, a quiet escape from the noise of the crowd. The most popular of which is the plateau-like rock formation which is flocked by visitors. There is also the 15-20 foot cliff part where one can take hair-raising photos (at their own risk...).

Thank you, Mr. Toshi and Ms. Taeko! |
My family and I got to visit Senjojiki on the 11th day of our 2018 Japan Trip. What we love about this place is that it reminds us of the beautiful Kapurpurawan rock formations of Ilocos Norte in the Philippines which we also visited a few months prior to our trip to Japan. During our visit to Senjojiki, there were only a handful of visitors in the area and it looked like we were only the foreigners around. The weather was also great during our visit, which worked well for my magnus opus Instagram photo. What's great about Senjojiki is that it is free from the entrance and environmental fees which plague most of its counterparts in the Philippines.

Why visit Senjojiki?
Overall, Senjojiki is a must-visit destination in Shirahama. It offers a very picturesque view not to mention it's a perfect backdrop for your social media photos. Aside from that, don't miss out on the nearby restaurant on the second floor of the souvenir shop. It sells good food, and also provides a different view/ angle of Senjojiki.
Getting to Senjojiki:
From Osaka, ride the Ocean Arrow train of the JR West Line and board down at Shirahama Station. From there, ride the bus to the bus stop near Yukai Resort Hotel. Walk for about 10 minutes going to Senjojiki.
