Naga Metropolitan Cathedral Revisited 2019 - Camarines Sur

Located at Elias Angeles Street, Naga City in the province of Camarines Sur, Naga Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the historical Catholic churches found in what is dubbed as the Pilgrimage City of Naga.

Naga Metropolitan Cathedral History

Constructed in 1575 and finished four years later, Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, also called the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John served as a sanctuary and pilgrimage destination for generations of pilgrims.

Naga Metropolitan Cathedral sustained heavy damage in 1856 due to a strong typhoon and also from the earthquake of 1887. It was quickly repaired by the locals. Despite this time and Mother Nature still took its toll on the church particularly its facade. Finally, in 1987, the cathedral underwent restoration works meant to bring back its glory.

The first time that I got to visit Naga Metropolitan Cathedral was during our 2014 Bicol Road Trip. I finally got to revisit it during the second day of our 2019 Bicol Road Trip (half a decade later). During my latest visit, it was observable that they had repainted the facade, however, I wasn't able to identify what they restored or changed in its interior. You might want to check out how it looked like five years ago by clicking this LINK.

What made my recent visit more memorable was the fact that I got to hear mass in the cathedral for the first time. However, sadly, Naga Metropolitan Cathedral was the only church that I got to revisit that day. Given the chance, I would surely love to revisit the three other historic churches that I've visited last time and hopefully attend mass there as well.
