Maruyama Park - Kyoto

Located at Higashiyama District in Kyoto City, Maruyama Park is a vast public park next to Yasaka Jinja Shrine. It is designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty.

Also called Maruyama Koen, Maruyama Park is a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing parties locally known as hanami. Hence, the park tends to be very crowded every first week of April. The park is also a popular spot during New Year's Eve.

Despite having plenty of sakura trees, the star attraction and centerpiece of Maruyama Park is its shidarezakura also known as a weeping cherry tree in English. To fully appreciate this tree, try visiting the park at night when it is lit up. You'd surely love the illuminated tree which stands out among the other trees in the park.

For those who plan to visit Maruyama Park but will miss the sakura season and New Year's Eve, don't fret, there are still plenty of things to see and do in the park. You might want to try out the open-air tea shops and restaurants inside the park vicinity.  There is also a picturesque pond that if angled and composed well will rake in those likes and hearts in your social media accounts.

I got to visit Maruyama Park with my family on the 4th day of our 2019 Japan trip. It was our second destination (the first was Yasaka Jinja) of our Higashiyama District walking tour itinerary. Since we visited the park in December we, of course, missed out on the cherry blossoms and most of the trees also lack foliage. The good thing about this, on the other hand, is that there were very few parkgoers during our visit.

Why Visit Maruyama Park?

Maruyama Park is best visited during the cherry blossom season or during fall. Its spring and autumn foilage is a must-see. Since I visited during winter of 2019, I would definitely revisit Maruyama Park someday soon to see with my own eyes the beauty of the park during spring and autumn.

Getting to Maruyama Park:

 

From Kyoto Station, ride bus number 206 or 100. Board down at Gion bus stop. From there, walk through Yasaka Shrine until you reach the park.

Agusan Del Sur: Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center

Found in Barangay Consuelo, Bunawan in the province of Agusan Del Sur, Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center became famous for its world known centerpiece exhibit.
