Road to JET 2021: Intro
Road to JET 2021 |
What is the JET Programme?
JET Programme stands for Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. It is a Japanese government initiative that aims to promote mutual understanding between the people of Japan and other nations. The program also aims to promote grassroots international exchange between Japan and other nations.
JET Programme started in 1987 and was exclusive mostly to native English-speaking countries. The program eventually expanded to become one of the largest exchange programs in the world having already invited thousands of educators, coaches, and coordinators for international relations.
The JET Programme was opened to the Filipinos in 2014. Since then, the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines already sent around 200+ JET participants to Japan.

Road to JET 2021: Intro
After my first visit to Japan way back in 2014, I have dreamt of coming back to stay longer and hopefully work there as a teacher. I first planned to join the JET Programme as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in 2016, however, it didn't push through as I was not confident with my credentials and teaching skills then.
Since then, I focused on my family, my passion for writing, and building my credentials. I got to publish several history textbooks under Abiva Publishing House, be a Google Certified Educator, be the leader of Google Educator Group (GEG) South Manila, and become a moderator for the Hiragana Club in my school.
Fast forward, my wife rekindled my dream of working in Japan one night after our usual late-night lengthy reflection chats. It was quite timely as the Facebook page of the Japan Embassy in the Philippines would post the opening of the application for the JET Programme a few days later.
In the next articles, I will share with you the timeline of my application and the steps that I took to be an ALT for the JET Programme 2021.
