Takimi Koji details
Are you looking for a food trip destination for your upcoming trip to Osaka City? Then this place might interest you.
Takimi Koji is a gourmet street hidden literally in the basement floor of one of Osaka's most famous structures - the famed Umeda Sky Building. It has a theme that recreates the vibes of the Taisho period (1910 -1920) in Osaka. Takimi Koji has been designed well that you would feel that you have time traveled in the past. You would surely appreciate the little details added by those who designed the place from the Taisho period advertisements to the lantern lights used in the streets.
As most of you know, Osaka is the place to experience the culture of dining. Locals even coined the word "kuidaore" which means "eat until you drop". Takimi Koji has a plethora of famous Osakan food like okonomiyaki, kushikatsu, and takoyaki. These can be found in the different restaurants around the gourmet street.

Just a tip, explore Takimi Koji first before settling in one restaurant. The Taisho period feels would surely have an effect on your dining preferences. Also, try some food that you have not tried yet, who knows you might discover a new dish to add to your favorite list.
I got to visit Takimi Koji during my solo backpacking trip to Kyoto and Osaka last January 14, 2022, which happens to be my 74th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. Takimi Koji was not actually on my itinerary during the said backpacking trip. I was simply looking for a place to eat dinner before going home after enjoying the view from the Kuchu Observatory of the Umeda Sky Building. There were numerous restaurants in Takimi Koji. I took time exploring the place first before finally deciding where to eat. That turned out to be a good idea as it made me appreciate and enjoy the Taisho period theme of Takimi Koji.
The owner cooks my Osaka-style okonomiyaki |
I eventually settled in Kiji which was an okonomiyaki restaurant. Just to share, okonomiyaki is actually one of my favorite Japanese food. In my observation, the restaurant is managed by its owner who is also its main cook. Judging from the message board inside the restaurant, it seems like this place is a famous go-to place for tourists based on the different currencies pinned on the said board.
Aside from that, I also enjoyed watching the owner cook the okonomiyaki. My order took time to cook but what surprised me was that the owner apologized to me in fluent English. Regardless of the wait, the food was superb. It was totally worth it.
After paying and when I was about to leave, the owner called me and asked me to head over to the cook's area, and then he allowed me to hold his spatula to use as props for our photo together. Overall, it was such a memorable experience. It's also a perfect way to end my trip around Kyoto and Osaka. I'm looking forward to more experiences like this in the future.
