10 Things to Do in Rumoi City

10 Things to Do in Rumoi City

Rumoi City (留萌市) is a coastal city located in Rumoi Subprefecture on the northwestern side of Hokkaido Prefecture. The origins of the name Rumoi are found in the Ainu word Rurumoppe. The word has several meanings but according to the Ainu language translator Uehara Kumijaro, Rurumoppe is an abbreviation of the word Rurumowomoppe, which means "The place where high tide mixes quietly into the river."

For those planning to visit Rumoi City to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things To Do in Rumoi City:

1. Hunt for the 3 different Rumoi manhole cover designs spread around town. Then look for the lone colored Rumoi manhole cover on the Rumoi Roadside Station grounds.

The D613 locomotive engine in Miharashi Park

2. Check out the D613 locomotive engine displayed in Miharashi Park. If you visit in spring, you can follow the path up the hill near the locomotive engine. Near the top of the hill is a hidden sakura grove.

3. Head over to Rumoi Roadside Station to buy souvenirs and try the soft cream with cones made from locally grown pumpkin. You can also buy a kazunoko from the Rumoi unique products vending machine. Lastly, if you are collecting roadside station stamps and unique manhole cover cards, then you can ask about them from the staff inside the roadside station.

4. Learn about Rumoi City's rich history at Umi no Furusatokan or Seaside Community Center. It's free and can be explored in an hour.

Experience the Taishi Festival

5. Join the Taishi Festival in June. There are plenty of unique festival food and games to try out and enjoy. This festival changes locations around the city so please check out the official website of the city for updates.

Rumoi Shrine - Autumn and winter

6. Visit Rumoi Shrine and get a goshuin for your collection or visit it during winter and see its unique snow-covered look.

Rumoi River - Winter and Summer

7. Walk, bike, or jog along the Rumoi River early morning. If you're visiting in winter then check out the frozen river. It's an excellent place to unwind.

Senbodai - winter and summer

8. Hike up to Senbodai and see the panoramic view of the city or its nighttime lights. If you're visiting in winter, you will get the opportunity to see Rumoi City covered in snow. Heads up though, it would be a challenge to go up to Senbodai in winter but then again, it's worth it.

Ogonmizaki Seaside Park

9. Watch the sunset at Ogonmizaki Seaside Park. It is listed as one of the 100 Best Sunsets in Japan. If you visit during the summer, you can also buy bait in one of the stores near the park and then catch crabs along the shore of Ogonmizaki Seaside Park

10. Bask in the sun or swim at Rumoi Golden Beach. You can also pitch a tent here and enjoy the sunset while listening to the calming sound of the waves kissing the sand.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Rumoi City gave you an idea and inspiration to visit the beautiful city of Rumoi in the near future.
