10 Things to Do in Toyotomi

10 Things to Do in Toyotomi

Toyotomi (豊富町) is a town in the Soya Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name is derived from the Ainu word "Ebekorobetsu" (ipe-kor-pet) which means "a river with fish (food)". Since the region is rich in natural resources, it was given the name Toyotomi, which is an alternative reading of the Chinese characters for the term houfu (豊富), which means "rich" or "abundant".

For those planning to visit the town of Toyotomi to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Toyotomi:

Toyotomi Manhole Covers
Toyotomi Manhole Covers

1. Take a picture of Toyotomi’s unique manhole covers. So far, I have seen 2 unique manhole designs but there are three colored variations of this in the town. However, upon checking the town’s website, I learned that there are 4 other different colored Toyotomi manhole cover designs spread around town. Aside from that, there are 2 special Gundam manhole covers and a Toyotomi Pokemon Manhole Cover.

2. Buy and drink Toyotomi Milk. This mineral-rich milk is the specialty of the town and is said to be one of the, if not, the most delicious in Japan.

Toyotomi Hachimangu Shrine

3. Visit Toyotomi Hachimangu Shrine. You can offer prayers and also get a goshuin there for your goshuin collection.

4. Attend the Toyotomi Hachimangu Shrine Grand Festival held every June 15 of the year.

Kabutonuma Park Campground

5. Pitch a tent and camp for the night at Kabutonuma Park Campground. If you don't have one, then you can rent one of the unique-looking cottages in the campground.

Toyotomi Natural Park

6. Take a stroll and enjoy the scenery at Toyotomi Natural Park.

Ferme

7. Try the soft cream of Ferme. It is said to be one of the best in Hokkaido.

Route 106

8. Drive along Route 106 and enjoy the view of the Sarobetsu Coast. On a clear day, you would see Rishiri Island.

Toyotomi Onsen

9. Take a dip in Toyotomi Onsen. It contains a little bit of oil which is believed to be very effective in sterilizing bacteria and is believed by many to be a cure for many skin diseases. However, heads up, the oil here does not smell like baby oil but petroleum oil.

Sarubetsu Wetland Center - Sarubetsu Marsh

10. Visit and explore Sarubetsu Marsh. There is a boardwalk in Sarubetsu Wetland Center where you can take a stroll in the vast marshlands without getting wet or dragged under by a who knows what creature living in the marshlands.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Toyotomi gave you an idea and inspiration to visit the town soon.
