Wakkanai Fukuko Market - Hokkaido
Wakkanai Fukuko Market (稚内副港市場) is a place in Wakkanai City that specializes in newly caught and preserved seafood. It is located at 1-6-28 Minato, Wakkanai City in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.
Wakkanai Fukuko Market details
Wakkanai Fukuko Market opened to the public in 2007. It became popular for its wide variety of seafood products. Locals and tourists would usually come here to buy omiyage or souvenirs whenever they would go travel back home or visit friends in other prefectures.
Aside from seafood products, Wakkanai Fukuko Market doubles as a tourist destination as it houses the Wakkanai Karafuto Museum on its second floor and a nostalgic Showa-era shopping street reproduction on the ground floor of its exhibit area.

At the far end of the market area, visitors can try out the sumptuous meals of the restaurants there. Some dishes are a bit pricey but I assure you, it's worth it (unless you have a seafood allergy).
Inside the Wakkanai Fukuko Market
Wakkanai Fukuko Market is best visited in the early morning if you aim to buy fresh seafood. Heads up though, most of the vendors don't speak English so better learn a few useful Japanese shopping phrases like "ikura desu ka" which translates to "How much is this?" but in a funny twist also translates to "Is this salmon roe?"

I visited Wakkanai Fukuko Market for the first time during my Wakkanai Solo Backpacking trip last March 21, 2022, which was my 140th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme.
Overall, I highly recommend that you include this in your itinerary if you are in Wakkanai City. It would totally be worth your time.
