10 Things to Do in Mashike
10 Things to Do in Mashike |
Mashike (増毛町) is a town located in Rumoi Subprefecture, Hokkaido. Mashike's name is derived from the Ainu word "mashkini'' or "mashuke,'' which means ``a place with many seagulls,''.
For those planning to visit the town of Mashike to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Mashike:
Mashike manhole covers |
1. Take a picture of Mashike’s unique manhole covers. So far, I have seen 3 unique Mashike manhole designs. The colored manhole cover is displayed inside the Mashike Town Hall.
Tsuribashi Bridge |
2. Stroll around Shokan Park and Mashike Riverside Park. They are connected by a beautiful red Tsuribashi Bridge. On a clear day, you would be able to see Mt. Shokanbetsu.
Mashike Itsukushima Shrine |
3. Visit Mashike Itsukushima Shrine. You can offer prayers and also get a goshuin there for your goshuin collection.
Former Mashike Station |
Mashike Choei Shokanbetsudake Ski Area |
5. Spend the whole day skiing at Mashike Choei Shokanbetsudake Ski Area.
Grape picking in Mashike |
6. Go fruit picking in one of the many orchards in Mashike. Depending on the season, you get to pick and eat different kinds of fruits. My favorite is grapes from early September to late October.
The sweet shrimp of Mashike |
7. Try the seafood from Mashike. I highly suggest the famed sweet shrimp of Mashike.
Cape Ofuyu Observatory |
8. Head up to Cape Ofuyu Observatory and see the beautiful panoramic view of the Ofuyu Coast. Be careful though, there are cases when there are mamushi (Japanese pit viper) sightings in the area.
Kunimare Sake Brewery K.K. |
9. Try the famed sake of Kunimare Sake Brewery K.K. – The northernmost sake brewery in Japan. You should try the different sakes for free and then buy what you feel is the best for you.
Mt. Shokanbetsu |
10. Hike Mt. Shokanbetsu. Don't forget to bring plenty of water and snacks. It's going to be a long hike.
