10 Things to Do in Sapporo City

10 Things to Do in Sapporo City

Sapporo City (札幌市) is the capital and also the largest city of Hokkaido Prefecture. It ranks as the fifth most populous city in Japan. Its name came from the Ainu word Satporopet which means 'Dry, Great River'.

For those planning to visit Sapporo City to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Sapporo City:

Sapporo manhole cover

1. Take a picture of Sapporo’s unique manhole covers. So far, I have seen 2 different manhole designs. The colored manhole cover can be found on the Sapporo Clock Tower grounds.

Sapporo Station

2. Explore Sapporo Station and enjoy the plethora of stores and restaurants in it.

Odori Park

3. Visit and spend half the day exploring Odori Park from end to end. The park hosts numerous festivals like the Sapporo Lilac Festival, Sapporo Snow Festival, and Sapporo Summer Festival to name a few.

Sapporo TV Tower

4. Head up to Sapporo TV Tower and enjoy the view of the city, particularly Odori Park.

Donichika Ticket

5. Avail of the Donichika Ticket during the holidays or on weekends and ride the subway unlimited times to visit different parts of the city.

Sapporo Ramen Alley

6. Eat the famed Sapporo Ramen in the Sapporo Ramen Alley. There are plenty of ramen shops to choose from. Visit after lunch or before dinner so that there would be fewer people.

Sapporo Clock Tower

7. Go to Sapporo Clock Tower and learn about Japan’s oldest clock tower.

Former Hokkaido Government Office / Akarenga

8. Visit and take a picture of the Former Hokkaido Government Office / Akarenga. If you have time, go inside it and learn more about the building.

Hokkaido Shrine

9. Visit Hokkaido Shrine to pay respect and offer prayers. You can also get a goshuin here for your collection. If you visit on June 14 – 16, you will be able to participate in the Sapporo Festival.

Sapporo Snow Festival

10. Enjoy the Sapporo Snow Festival in Susukino and Odori Park. Take pictures of the countless ice and snow creations. Keep this in mind though, visit during the night as the illumination and the projection mapping add beauty to these sculptures.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Sapporo City gave you an idea and inspiration to visit the city soon.
