Obira (小平町) is a town located in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. The town's name if translated per kanji means 小(small) and 平(flat). It is popular for its stunning coastal views and also its agricultural products. 

For those planning to visit the town of Obira to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Obira:

1. Take a picture of Obira’s unique manhole covers. So far, I have seen 2 unique Obira manhole designs. One is in front of the Obira Roadside Station and the other is near Obira Shrine.

Rare twin Obira melon

2. Try the super delicious Obira melon. Other must-try foods are octopus, wagyu, and watermelon.


Obira Shrine

3. Visit Obira Shrine in the town proper. You can offer prayers and also get a goshuin there for your goshuin collection.


Inside Karakure

4. Dine in at Karakure and enjoy its world-class soba / Dine in at Sumire and enjoy its delicious soba dishes. Aside from that, you can also admire the sunset from inside the restaurant. 


Obimaru Square

5. Visit Obimaru Square and enjoy its vast grounds. There is a large space to go strolling and also a mini golf course behind the Kodaira Town General Exchange Terminal Yuttarikan. As a bonus, take a picture with the giant duck-billed dinosaur on its grounds.


Onishika Twin Beach

6. Swim and bask under the sun at Onishika Twin Beach. During camping season, the beach also doubles as a camping ground and is a popular camping spot for many.

7. Visit the Obira Roadside Station Nishin-banya and avail yourself of locally produced products. You can also get the roadside station stamp here. Aside from that, if you go up to the second floor, you can go inside the mini museum to see some historical displays including a well-preserved horse. It’s free.


Nishin-Bunka Historical Park

8. Watch the sunset at Nishin-Bunka Historical Park. It's one of the best places to watch the sunset in Hokkaido. If you time your visit right, you can angle your photo with the sun on top of the park's arc or inside it.


Kodaira Town General Exchange Terminal "Yuttarikan"

9. Go on a relaxing dip at the onsen of Kodaira Town General Exchange Terminal "Yuttarikan" after pitching your tent at the nearby Obiracho Boyodai Camping Ground.


Former Hanada Family Banya

10. Visit the Former Hanada Family Banya which is the northernmost important cultural property in Japan and learn about the "Herring Boom Era" of the region. There are numerous preserved exhibits inside the building which would surely make you feel that you're transported to that era.

    I have been to Karakure once with a Japanese friend. The soba was delicious.

Agusan Del Sur: Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center

Found in Barangay Consuelo, Bunawan in the province of Agusan Del Sur, Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center became famous for its world known centerpiece exhibit. Daisetsuzan National Park ( 大雪山国立公園 ) spans 2,267 square kilometers and encompasses 16 peaks, offering diverse trails, abundant wildlife, and alpine flora.
