10 Things to Do in Chippubetsu

Chippubetsu (秩父別町) is a town in the Sorachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. Derived from the Ainu language, "ci-kus-pet'' (our, passing, river = river with a passage), or "cip-kus-pet'' (boat, It is said that it was corrupted from [passing, river]. In addition, there is a theory that the name is derived from "tutup-us-pet'' (Tokusa, many, river)

Chippubetsu manhole cover

1. Take a picture of Chippubetsu’s manhole cover. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is common and can be seen around Chippubetsu town proper.


Chippubetsu Roadside Station / Kane no Narumachi Chippubetsu

2. Visit the Chippubetsu Roadside Station / Kane no Narumachi Chippubetsu and buy products that are made from Chippubetsu. You can also get the roadside station stamp here for the Hokkaido Stamp rally booklet.


Chippu Shrine/ Chichibu Shrine

3. Visit the Chippu ShrineChichibu Shrine. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. You can also get a goshuin here.


The Cubic Connection

4. If you have kids, bring them to The Cubic Connection for outdoor fun. It’s free.


Kid`s Square Chikkuru

5. If you prefer indoors, bring them to the nearby Kid's Square Chikkuru which has Hokkaido’s largest net playground equipment. It’s also free.


100th Anniversary Memorial Tower

6. Head up to the top of the 
100th Anniversary Memorial Tower, also called Chippubetsu Centennial Memorial Tower, and enjoy a bird' s-eye view of Chippubetsu. It’s free, and if you visit at noon, you’ll hear the tower’s bell ring.


Belle Park Chippubetsu Camping Ground

7. Stay for the day and camp at the Belle Park Chippubetsu Camping Ground. If you don’t have a tent, you can rent one of the cabins here. If you visit in spring, you can see the beautiful seasonal scenery such as cherry blossoms, moss phlox, and white birch.


Chichibubetsu Onsen Chip Yu & Yu

8. Take a dip in the onsen of Chichibubetsu Onsen Chip Yu & Yu. It is just a few meters away from the Chippubetsu Roadside Station. It is a relaxation facility where you can enjoy a variety of baths and saunas, complete with day-trip bathing and accommodation facilities.


Chippubetsu Folk Museum

9. Visit the Chippubetsu Folk Museum to learn more about the rich history of Chippubetsu. It has a lot of interesting displays. Don't forget to take photos with the taxidermied bear, horse, and cow. 

Rose Garden Chippubetsu

10. Spend the day at Rose Garden Chippubetsu. It is open from late June to early October. Approximately 3,000 roses of 300 varieties are in full bloom in a total area of 5.4 ha, 3,000 square meters of rose planting area.
