Former Rumoi Saga Fishing Grounds - Hokkaido

The Former Rumoi Saga Fishing Grounds (旧留萌佐賀家漁場)  is a National Historic Site as well as a National Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. It is located at 13 Reukecho, Rumoi City in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

Heinojo, the eighth head of the Saga dynasty, created the herring fishing grounds in 1844. It was the home of the Saga family, who at their peak had 12 construction networks in Rumoi.

The Saga Fishing Grounds were not only used as residences by the Saga Clan, but they also housed workers during the fishing season. There were also facilities such as a drying area, storage area, and a dock.





The banya (main house), tota storehouse (product storehouse), and ship storeroom are the sole remaining structures. Under the Rumoi Herring Fishing Tools, the Former Rumoi Saga Fishing Grounds and the 3745 artifacts housed and displayed there are designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property.

My family and I had the opportunity to visit the Former Rumoi Saga Fishing Grounds for the first time on August 7, 2022, my 279th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. During the visit, we were accompanied by our friend Teacher Kanda. My family and I learned a lot about the herring fishing era in Rumoi.

If you are not from Rumoi, it is difficult to access the Former Rumoi Saga Fishing Ground. It's not because it's too far away, but because it only opens a few times a year. It was only open from August 3-9, 2022. If you wish to go inside and listen to the curator discuss the history of the Former Rumoi Saga Fishing Ground, please visit the Rumoi City website 👉LINK👈 and wait for the next opening date to be announced. They normally announce it around the middle of July.

The Former Rumoi Saga Fishing Ground is open to the public for a very short time usually every August. When it’s open to the public, you can enter it from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Ride the Engan Bus Rumoi Beskari (Mashike) Line and board down at Reuke Itsukushima Jinja Shita or Reuke bus stop. From there, the Foremer Rumoi Saga Fishing Grounds is a few meters away by foot.

Agusan Del Sur: Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center

Found in Barangay Consuelo, Bunawan in the province of Agusan Del Sur, Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center became famous for its world known centerpiece exhibit. Bunawan arc That exhibit is named Lolong , the world's longest salt water crocodile ever caught. Lolong was captured in Bunawan Creek, a part of the vast Agusan Marsh on September 3, 2011. Daisetsuzan National Park ( 大雪山国立公園 ) spans 2,267 square kilometers and encompasses 16 peaks, offering diverse trails, abundant wildlife, and alpine flora.
