The building was constructed in 1928 and served as the Tomamae Town Office for over 60 years. When the new office building was finished in 1984, the old office building was repurposed and reopened as the Tomamae Town Museum.

Additionally, there is an archaeological section of the museum with artifacts and informational panels about the Paleolithic through the Jomon and Satsumon periods. There are also several Ainu-related artifacts in and outside the museum like the Ainu chise or Ainu house.

I posted only a handful of photos of the exhibits and I purposely didn't label them so that you would only get a glimpse of what the Tomamae Town Museum has to offer. Please visit it and enjoy it with your own eyes.

Tomamae Town Museum wouldn’t be complete without featuring the Sankebetsu Brown Bear Incident. It is well explained through images and charts, as well as a replica of the home from the time of the attack and a large stuffed brown bear.

Team Nicerio visits Tomamae Town Museum

My family and I visited Tomamae Town Museum for the first time last August 12, 2022which was my 41st week here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It was one of the destinations that we visited on the 1st day of our 5-day Drive Up North Road Trip. We learned a lot about the rich history of Tomamae and also the tragic story of the Sankebetsu Brown Bear Incident. I highly recommend tourists include this place in their itinerary if they are visiting the town of Tomamae.
