Teshio History Museum details

The building that is now known as the Teshio History Museum is a reproduction of the old Teshio Town Hall which was built sometime in 1951. It is referred to by the locals as the akarenga or red brick building.

Teshio History Museum has a beautiful red brick building that would remind you of Sapporo's Hokkaido Government Red Brick Office

Currently, the Teshio History Museum houses and displays more than 2000 priceless objects. The Teshio River's watershed's history, which was shaped by boat navigation, is the centerpiece of the exhibition, together with items discovered during excavations at the Kawaguchi Ruins at the Teshio River's mouth.

Nagatobune

The real one is twice the size of this display

The restored ½-scale Nagato Ship, or Nagatobune, is the first exhibit you see when you enter the museum. The Nagatobune, which sailed up the Teshio River, was 15m long and 3.2m broad, with a load capacity of 40 kokus (approximately 7.2kl) and a cargo capacity of 100 bales of rice. It is essentially a rowing boat with a sail that was commonly used from the Meiji to the early Showa periods.

Displays in Teshio History Museum*

I posted only a handful of photos of the exhibits and I purposely didn't label them so that you would only get a glimpse of what the Teshio History Museum has to offer. Please visit it and enjoy it with your own eyes.

Inside the museum, visitors would see various artifacts like earthenware and tools related to ancient times. The world's oldest gray whale fossil, "Teshio Gray Whale," estimated to be 3 million years old, is also on exhibit.

Homer, Alaska Sister City Exhibits:

A small area is designated for exhibits from Homer, Alaska which is Teshio's sister city.

There is also a section of the museum dedicated to exhibitions from Homer, Alaska, Teshio's sister city.

Team Nicerio visits Teshio History Museum

My family and I visited the Teshio History Museum for the first time last August 12, 2022which was my 41st week here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It was one of the destinations that we visited on the 1st day of our 5-day Drive Up North Road Trip. Even though I pass this museum every time I visit Teshio High School, this is the first time I've been inside. My family and I learned a lot about Teshio's history and grew to appreciate it more.

  1. The Teshio History Museum reminds of the Rengakan here in Sapporo. It's the first time that I have heard of this place.
