10 Things to Do in Date City

10 Things to Do in Date City

Date (伊達市) is a city in the Iburi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name of the city comes from the Watari Date Clan who settled in the Tohoku region in the early Meiji period.

For those planning to visit Date City to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Date:

Former Ohtaki village manhole cover

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Date City. So far, I have seen one unique manhole cover. It was the manhole cover of the former village of Ohtaki which merged with Date City in 2006. I saw this during our stay at Midorinokaze Resort Kitayuzawa.

Date Roadside Station

2. Visit the Date Roadside Station / Roadside station Date rekishi-no-mori and buy products that are produced or made in the town. You can also get the roadside station stamp here for the Hokkaido Stamp rally booklet. This roadside station has an Otemon which would remind you of the Japanese castles back in Honshu.

Date Shrine

3. Visit the Date Shrine. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. You can also get a goshuin here.

Ōtaki Niagara Falls

4. Check out and admire the Ōtaki Niagara Falls. You can also stroll around the area and enjoy the nature.

Orouen-Ōtaki Camping Ground

5. Go camping at Orouen-Ōtaki Camping Ground. It is near the Oro Wen Shiribetsu River so if you pitch your tent near it, you will be relaxed by the sound of flowing water.

Tengu Rock

6. Go on a trek and see the Tengu Rock of Okukifudake at Kitamarefucho District. However, always take precautions as there are times when brown bears are spotted in the area.

Date History and Culture Museum

7. Visit the Date History and Culture Museum and learn about the history of the city. This museum has numerous interesting exhibits and displays worth checking out.

Sangaitaki Falls

8. Check out and admire Sangaitaki Falls in Sangaitaki Park. It is a popular place to visit during autumn as the foliage adds more beauty to the scenery.

Midorinokaze Resort Kitayuzawa

9. Stay at Midorinokaze Resort Kitayuzawa for the night. It's a little pricy, but the meal and the indoor and outdoor onsen with numerous scented hot springs are well worth it.

Kitakogane Shell Mound

10. Visit the Kitakogane Shell Mound and learn about the culture of the Jomon period. It is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the Jomon Archaeological Sites in Hokkaido and Northern Tohoku (Hokkaido, Aomori Prefecture, Iwate Prefecture, Akita Prefecture).

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Date City gave you an idea and inspiration to visit one of the historical cities in Hokkaido Prefecture.
