Former Mashike Station - Hokkaido
Former Mashike Station (増毛駅跡) was once the last station of the Rumoi Main Line until it closed on December 4, 2016. It is located at 1 Chome Bentencho in the town of Mashike in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.
The Former Mashike Station building and its surroundings have been beautifully preserved and refurbished, evoking a feeling of nostalgia for those who grew up in the area. The station building itself has been restored to its original condition, and some of the buildings that played a part in the 1981 Japanese movie "STATION," featuring Ken Takakura.
Visitors can enjoy a hearty meal at the Takakoya Food Gourmet (孝子屋 ぐるめ食品) restaurant located inside the station. The restaurant serves up some of Mashike's most popular and mouth-watering dishes such as octopus zangi and sweet shrimp soup.
Today, Mashike Station might not see as much foot traffic as it used to, but it remains a treasure trove of history for visitors who love to explore and learn about Japan's rich culture. If you're traveling to Hokkaido, make sure to add the Former Mashike Station to your itinerary!

Team Nicerio visits the Former Mashike Station
My family and I visited the Former Mashike Station during our Mashike – Ishikari Road Trip last September 3, 2022. It was my 306th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It was our first destination for the said road trip. To be honest, there is nothing much to be done in the station but to take pictures. However, there is a small restaurant inside it that is worth checking out. It sells very affordable and tasty food.Former Mashike Station Fees
It’s FREE to enter the Former Mashike Station. However, I highly suggest that you bring money so that you can try the octopus zangi (500 yen) and sweet shrimp soup (100 yen) which are both highly recommended.Former Mashike Station Operating Hours
The restaurant inside the Former Mashike Station is open from 9 AM – 5 PM on weekdays and 9 AM – 4 PM on weekends. Why visit the Former Mashike Station?
There is nothing much to do in the Former Mashike Station. However, it’s good to note that it is now renovated and preserved, and aside from that, it now houses a restaurant that sells delicious octopus zangi and sweet shrimp soup.Getting to the Former Mashike Station:
Commuting to Mashike became less convenient after the closure of the JR Mashike Line. Regardless, tourists can still ride the bus to Mashike from Rumoi City.
