This picturesque park is a 1,500-meter-long sand bank formed at the intersection of the Sea of Japan and the Ishikari River. Ishikari Light House

One of the park's most notable landmarks is the Ishikari Lighthouse. This historic lighthouse has been around for over 100 years since it opened in 1892. The lighthouse used to be striped in black and white, but it was repainted in red and white after it was used as a film stage for a Shochiku movie. The lighthouse is a symbol of Ishikari and a great spot for taking photos.

When you need a break, head to the Hamanasu Hill Park Visitor Center. Here, you can shop for Ishikari specialty products and Hamanasu-related gifts. Try their Hermanus Soft Cream, a unique original product with a slightly pink color and a lovely scent of the rose family. You can also enjoy a stunning view of Ishikari Bay and the Ishikari River from the terrace on the second floor.

The Hamanasu Hill Park Visitor Center also houses a fascinating collection of historic lighthouse lenses. On the first floor, you can see the "Mute Fudo Lens" and a lens used in the second-generation Ishikari Lighthouse. The "Former Ishikari Lighthouse Light Equipment (6th Magnification Lens)" is on display as well. These lenses are fascinating to look at and will take you back in time.

Team Nicerio visits Hamanasu Hill Park

My family and I visited Hamanasu Hill Park during our Mashike – Ishikari Road Trip last September 4, 2022. It was my 307th day here in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. This scenic park is one of our main destinations during the trip. We enjoyed taking a stroll along the elevated wooden walkway of the park. We had fun taking wacky pictures and watching the wildlife in the area. However, it was pretty humid during our visit so we didn’t complete the whole route along the park. Instead, we enjoyed the pink Hamanasu soft cream sold at the Hamanasu Hill Park Visitor Center.

Hamanasu Hill Park Fees

It’s FREE to enter and explore Hamanasu Hill Park. Parking is also FREE. However, I recommend that you bring money if you plan to go inside the Hamanasu Hill Park Visitor Center as there are plenty of products that you can buy as souvenirs or omiyage. You should also try the Hamanasu soft cream here.
