In this budget-friendly one-day itinerary, we'll explore the places near Sapporo Station on foot, aiming to cover as many attractions as possible without straining your finances.

1. Transportation from your accommodation to Sapporo Station is not included in this itinerary.

2. The accommodation budget is also not included.

3. The exploration time in a place is pegged at an hour per destination. However, you may opt to cut it shorter or stay longer. 

4. It is also assumed that you are traveling light and have drinks and some snacks with you.

5. Some of the places on this itinerary are closed in winter. This itinerary is best used from late April – late October.

Sapporo City Walking Course

8:30 AM

 

Estimated time of arrival at Sapporo Station.

 

8:35 AM

 

If you are inside Sapporo Station, head outside to the Sapporo Station South Square. It is the front part of Sapporo Station.

You might want to take a picture of Sapporo Station’s façade.

If you’re a fan of the Netflix Series “First Love” walk towards the nearby Sapporo Station South Taxi Stop and take a picture or recreate the “Taxi Waiting Scene” from Episode 1 of the series.

 

 

8:50 AM

 

From the station, walk towards the Hokkaido Government Red Brick Building also called Akarenga by many. It is one of the most famous buildings in Sapporo City.

The walking time from the station to the building is 8 minutes.

 

8:50 – 9:50 AM

 

Explore the Hokkaido Government Red Brick Building and its grounds.*

Admission Fee: FREE

 *As of January 2024 the building was still under renovation.


9:50 AM

 

Walk towards the Botanic Garden Hokkaidō University.

Travel time is about a minute.

 

9:50 – 12:00AM

 

Explore Botanic Garden Hokkaidō University.

Admission Fee: 420 yen for adults / 300 yen for elementary kids / FREE 6 years old and younger

Closed on Mondays

Walk to Sapporo Clock Tower.

Travel time is 10-15 minutes

 

Optional: You might want to buy some snacks/lunch and refreshments at any convenience stores along the way.

 

 

12:20 – 1:20 PM

 

 

Explore Sapporo Clock Tower

Admission Fee: 200 yen for adults / FREE junior high school and younger

Walk to Odori Park.

Travel time is about a minute.

 

1:20 PM to 3 PM

 

Explore Odori Park

Admission Fee: FREE

The park is long and might take more than an hour to fully explore. You may opt to explore only one tip of it.

Western tip: Sapporo City Museum Oba Hiroshi Memorial Room

Admission: FREE

Option 2

Eastern tip: Sapporo TV Tower

Admission: FREE souvenir shop area but if you want to go up to the observatory you need to pay 1,000 yen for adults / 500 yen for students / FREE for infants

Option 3

Visit both tips but don’t go inside the museum or Sapporo TV Tower.

Walk to Tanukikoji Shopping Street

Travel time from Odori Park to Tanukikoji is 10 - 15 minutes. 

 

 

3: 20 PM – 4: 20 PM

 

 

Explore Tanukikoji Shopping Street / Buy souvenirs at Tanukikoji Shopping Street

Walk to the Susukino Crossing

Travel time from Tanukikoji Shopping Street to Susukino Crossing is 3 minutes

You may choose to take a picture of the famed Nikka Whiskey Billboard.

 

 

4:30 PM

 

 

Head to the Sapporo Ramen Alley

Travel time from the Susukino Crossing to the Sapporo Ramen Alley is around 3 – 5 minutes

 

 

4:35 – 5:30 PM

 

 

Choose one of the ramen restaurants in Sapporo Ramen Alley and try the famed Sapporo Ramen.

5:35 PM

 

 

Walk back to the Susukino Crossing and wait for the billboard lights to turn on.

You may want to take another photo of the Nikka Whiskey Billboard as the crossing looks better at night with all the lights on.

 

6:00 PM

 

 

Walk back to Odori Park.

You may want to take another photo of the Sapporo TV Tower when it’s lit up.

If you have a budget to spare, you may want to go up to its observatory if you didn’t earlier. If you choose this option, add another hour to your itinerary.

 

6:20 PM

 

Walk back to Sapporo Station.

Option 1:

Head back to your accommodation.

Option 2:

Explore Sapporo Station before going back to your accommodation.

Option 3:

Head up to JR Tower Observatory T38 and see the beautiful night view of the city.
