Akabira Shrine - Hokkaido
Akabira Shrine (赤平神社) is the main shrine of the city of Akabira. It is located at 4 Chome-3 Izumimachi, Akabira City in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.
Akabira Shrine is dedicated to two deities- Amaterasu-Omikami, the enshrined deity from the settlers' hometown, Furibashinomiya, and Oyamazumi Okami, a deity enshrined in Omishima, Iyo Province. Initially a village shrine, it was moved to its current location in August 2013 and became a religious corporation in March 2016.
My family and I visited Akabira Shrine for the first time last September 10, 2022, as part of our September 9-11 Road Trip. It was my 313th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. I included Akabira Shrine in our itinerary as my daughter and I have a tradition of visiting the main shrines of each municipality we visit to pay respects and also offer some prayers.
