Canadian World Park details

Are you a fan of "Anne of Green Gables", the beloved novel published in 1908 by Canadian author Lucy Montgomery? Did you know that there is a private park, located in Ashibetsu City, Japan that is a replica of the fictional world of Anne, complete with recreations of buildings from the novel?

The story revolves around Anne, a red-haired, curious, and imaginative girl who becomes lifelong friends with Diana in Avonlea, a wild village. Visitors can step back in time and explore the homes of Anne and Diana, as well as the local church that played an important role in the story. Walking through these historic buildings is like entering the pages of the book, allowing you to visualize the story and experience the world of Anne.

Welcome to Canadian World

Before going into the park, you should avail of the parking ticket here. It's a self-service and honesty payment.

In its heyday in the 1990s, Canadian World Park attracted tens of thousands of visitors on a summer day. However, the park experienced a decline in visitors due to the geography of Ashibetsu and the Asian financial crisis in 1997. The park closed down in 1997 after which, the city adapted it and made it into a city park. Sadly, due to a lot of factors, some of the buildings are now in a state of disrepair. At present, the park is manned by volunteers and is open only from late April to late October. Despite this, Canadian World Park still maintains its charm and unique appeal, delighting visitors with its authentic replicas of the buildings from the novel.

Interestingly, Ashibetsu also has a sister city relationship with Charlottetown, Canada, where Green Gables, the iconic setting of the book, is located. Green Gables was built to the same blueprints as the replica in Canadian World, and when the original Green Gables in Prince Edward Island burned down, it was rebuilt using the same Canadian blueprints. This connection between the two locations beautifully highlights the significance of "Anne of Green Gables," which has touched the hearts of people all around the world.

Team Nicerio visits Canadian World Park

My family and I visited Canadian World Park for the first time last September 10, 2022, as part of our September 9-11 Road Trip. It was my 313th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. I included Canadian World in our itinerary as I have seen several amazing pictures of it on the net. Sadly, it was one of those places that opened up the conversation about Expectation VS. Reality.

    1. You can still visit Canadian World Park though. However, all you'd see are the preserved buildings in the park. They charge a very small amount to enter some of the buildings.
