10 Things to Do in Takasu

10 Things to Do in Takasu

Takasu (鷹栖町) is a town in the Kamikawa Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. Large birds like black kites, sparrowhawks, and goshawks have been said to have lived in Takasu Town when it was still an uninhabited region. The locals gave it the name "Chikappuni", which means "a place (nest) where a large bird (hawk) lives." in the Ainu language. It was translated to the kanji 鷹栖 which is read as "Takasu". That’s why it is no surprise that the mascot of the town – Attakasu-kun is a hawk.

For those planning to visit the town of Takasu to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Takasu:

Takasu manhole cover

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Takasu. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is commonly seen around town.

Takasu Hachiman Shrine

2. Visit the Takasu Hachiman Shrine You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. However, don’t confuse this with the Takasu Shrine located in Asahikawa City. You can find this small shrine at the southern end of Green Park in the heart of the town.

Melody Bridge

3. Check out the Melody Bridge (メロディー橋) located at 11 Sen district of the town. What makes this bridge stand out is that it has metallophones installed on its balustrade. If you ring them in order, you can play the song “Yuyake Koyake”. The bridge is considered as the first bridge that plays a melody in Japan.

Kitano Shrine

4. Visit the Kitano Shrine You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. It's one of the historic shrines of Takasu. It is an unmanned shrine, however, if you wish to avail of its goshuin, you can get it in Takasu Shrine in Asahikawa City.

Heiwa Dynamite

5. Dine at Heiwa Dynamite This newly opened restaurant offers different dishes like donburi, yakiniku, and ramen. Speaking of ramen, try out the highly recommended Dynamite Charsui

Green Park

6. Visit Green Park (緑地公園) and enjoy a relaxing stroll around it. If you have children, they would surely love the playground equipment. During a hot day, they would love splashing around the fountain area.

Palette Hills Campsite

7. Pitch a tent and camp at Palette Hills Campsite It’s a spacious campsite that is known for its sakura trees. If you visit in May, you can witness the Sakura tree illumination at night during the Sakura Fest. It also has a large parking space that could accommodate around 30 to 40 vehicles. It also has a clean toilet.

Sun Hall Happiness

8. Take a relaxing dip in the onsen of Sun Hall Happiness It’s a great place to relax after a long day exploring the town.

Takasu Town Local History Museum

9. Visit the Takasu Town Local History Museum (鷹栖町立郷土資料館) and learn about the history of the town. It might be a small museum but it has a lot of displays worth checking out.

Arashiyama Observation Deck

10. Hike or drive up to Arashiyama Observation Deck (
嵐山展望台) located at the southern tip of the town. This place has a panoramic view of Asahikawa City. It has a great view of the city regardless of season and time of day.
