10 Things to Do in Toma

10 Things to Do in Toma

Toma (当麻町) is a town in the Kamikawa Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The town’s name came from the Ainu words "to" (lake), "oma" (enter), and "nai" (river). However, nai was eventually dropped, and what remained became the town's current name.

For those planning to visit the town of Toma to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Toma:

Toma manhole cover

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Toma. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is commonly seen around town. The colored version of it is located outside the Toma Town Local History Museum.

Toma Shrine

2. Visit the Toma Shrine You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you collect them.

Toma Roadside Station

3. Visit the Toma Roadside Station It is a great place to go for a stretch or toilet break after a long drive and has a souvenir shop and restaurant. Don’t miss out on the watermelon soft cream as it is very delicious.

Densuke watermelon

4. Buy Toma’s famed Densuke watermelon. However, you might be shocked that these delicious watermelons can fetch up to 300,000 yen. One of the best places to buy this is the Toma Roadside Station

Mount Touma Observatory

5. Head up the Mount Touma Observatory (とうま山展望台) to see the panoramic view of the town and the surrounding fields and hills.

Toma World Insect Museum Papillon Chateau

6. Visit the Toma World Insect Museum Papillon Chateau (当麻世界の昆虫館 パピヨンシャトー) and learn about different kinds of insects. You will be amazed by its collection of preserved insects from all over the world.

Touma Sports Land Campsite / Touma Snow Campsite

7. Pitch a tent and camp at Touma Sports Land Campsite / Touma Snow Campsite It’s a spacious campsite that is near an onsen and an insect museum.

Toma Healthy Chateau

8. Take a relaxing dip in the onsen of Toma Healthy Chateau It’s a great place to relax after a long day exploring the town. The hot spring water has travertine raw stone which is said to relieve pain and relax the body.

Toma Town Local History Museum

9. Visit the Toma Town Local History Museum (
当麻町 郷土資料館 ここから) and learn about the history of the town. You will also see Toma's colored manhole here. What’s more amazing is that entrance to the museum is free and you can also get the manhole cover card here… also for free.

Toma Limestone Cave / Toma Bell Cave

10. Explore Toma Limestone Cave / Toma Bell Cave (
当麻鐘乳洞) and be amazed by the stalactites inside. Surprisingly, the cave is very tourist-friendly as there are walkways installed inside and plenty of lighting in different parts of the cave. Locals would jokingly tell you that it is the best place to visit in Toma during the summer as it is very cool inside the cave.

I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Toma gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this beautiful town in Central Hokkaido.
