Aibetsu Rural Park - Hokkaido
Aibetsu Rural Park (愛別町農村公園) is a vast public park in the town of Aibetsu. It is located in the Kitamachi district in the town of Aibetsu in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.
Aibetsu Rural Park has a fountain, barbecue area, toilet area, and ample parking space for 20 to 30 cars. It’s a place to go if you are looking for a quiet spot to relax, walk your pets, or enjoy some outdoor activities with family and friends.
Another must-see attraction in the park is the stone sculptures of Mr. Nobuya Nakai, a talented sculptor from Aibetsu Town. His stunning stone sculptures can be found throughout the park, providing a fascinating glimpse into local history and culture. As part of the 120th anniversary of the foundation of Aibetsu Town, 12 of his sculptures that were once displayed around Aibetsu were collected and are now maintained in the Aibetsu Rural Park.
Make sure to visit the Aibetsu Chureito Pagoda (愛別 忠霊塔), located in the north part of the park. This awe-inspiring monument is a tribute to those who lost their lives in the war and is a reminder of the importance of peace and unity.
If you're looking for breathtaking views, you won't have to look far. The park has a viewing deck on a hill where you can take in stunning vistas of the surrounding countryside. On clear days, you can even see the majestic Daisetsuzan in the distance.
And that's not all. The Aibetsu Mushroom Festival has been held here since 2019. This festival is a celebration of the town’s mushroom industry and includes a variety of fun activities and events. You'll have the chance to learn about local mushrooms, sample delicious mushroom dishes, and even bring home tons of mushrooms.
My family and I visited Aibetsu Rural Park for the first time last September 17, 2022, during our 3-day Respect for the Aged Day Road Trip. It was my 320th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. Honestly, we visited the park so that we could get a good stretch after driving for several hours. However, upon seeing the park, we decided to explore it was good that we did. Hopefully, we get to visit Aibetsu Rural Park again next year during the Aibetsu Mushroom Festival.
The public toilet is open from 9 AM – 10 PM only.
