It’s easy to mistake the Takasu Hachiman Shrine for the larger and older Takasu Shrine in Asahikawa City. Regardless, the Takasu Hachiman Shrine is the only shrine in the town. Built within the beautiful Ryokuchi Park / Green Park (緑地公園), this small yet magnificent shrine stands out with its striking red color against the lush green surroundings. It’s a perfect place to visit if you're looking for a serene and historical place to visit in Takasu.

One of the great things about visiting the Takasu Hachiman Shrine is the convenience factor. The park has its parking lot, so reaching the shrine is a breeze, especially if you're traveling by car. And once you step inside, the peace and tranquility that surround you will make you feel like you've entered a different world.

The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the traditional Shinto warrior deity of Japan, who is revered as the guardian of warriors and the patron of Japan's first emperor. As you wander around the shrine's various buildings, you'll see several elaborately decorated wooden torii gates, and various offerings of sake barrels, colorful decorations, and charms.

One of the notable features of Takasu Hachiman Shrine is its location in Ryokuchi Park, which is a lovely place to explore in its own right. Inside the park, you'll find several monuments related to the history of Takasu Town. The Nakayama Terushige (Seizan) Monument with Poetry and Haiku and the Pioneer Monument are particularly interesting, as it honors the area's early settlers who worked hard to establish a new community in this remote part of Hokkaido.

My family and I visited Takasu Hachiman Shrine for the first time last September 17 which was the first day of our 3-day Respect for the Aged Day Road Trip which is also my 46th weekend as an ALT under the JET Programme. We made a mistake when we first visited Takasu Shrine in Asahikawa City as we thought that it was the main shrine of the town of Takasu. Regardless, we drove back to Takusu to visit Takasu Hachiman Shrine. As part of our family tradition of visiting a religious establishment for the first time, we offered prayers and paid respects. After which we made a wish before leaving.


Overall, despite its relatively small size, Takasu Hachiman Shrine has its charm. It is worth visiting if you plan to visit the main shrines of each city, town, or village in Hokkaido.

It`s FREE to enter and explore the grounds of Takasu Hachiman Shrine. There is free parking nearby but it is part of Ryokuchi Park so it might be crowded during summer.

From the Asahikawa Station bus stop ride bus # 34-10 Route 10 (via Shunko) and board down at Kita 1-jo 3-chrome bus stop. From there, walk for about a minute to reach Takasu Hachiman Shrine.

Agusan Del Sur: Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center

Found in Barangay Consuelo, Bunawan in the province of Agusan Del Sur, Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center became famous for its world known centerpiece exhibit. Bunawan arc That exhibit is named Lolong , the world's longest salt water crocodile ever caught. Lolong was captured in Bunawan Creek, a part of the vast Agusan Marsh on September 3, 2011.
