Tanbo Art 2022 details

Tanbo Art was started by the youth group of JA Taisetsu. This unique form of art involves creating intricate designs on rice fields. The first rice paddy art was made way back in 2006. It featured the majestic Daisetsuzan.

The process of creating Tanbo Art is as fascinating as the art itself. The artists use different colors of rice plants to create amazing patterns and images, from traditional Japanese scenes to abstract designs. The planting, nurturing, and harvesting of rice is carefully timed and planned to create the desired effect.

The rice up close

Each year, new designs are created and visitors are encouraged to come and enjoy the beauty of the fields. Visitors can view the magnificent rice art from mid-July to mid-August. In the location, JA Taisetsu Rice Paddy Art constructed an 8-meter-high observatory from which you can view the rice field art as well as the rural Higashitakasu and Daisetsuzan scenery. Additionally, a direct sales market with fresh, locally produced foods and processed goods is available on the observatory's first floor from mid-July until early September.

Team Nicerio visits the Tanbo Art Asahikawa 2022

My family and I visited Tanbo Art for the first time last September 17, the first day of our 3-day Respect for the Aged Day Road Trip, which is also my 46th weekend as an ALT under the JET Programme. Sadly, we were a few days late as the observation deck was already closed to the public, Regardless, we were still able to see the beautiful rice paddy art from a lower vantage point. Hopefully, we get to revisit it next year.

Tanbo Art Fees

It’s FREE to park and go up to the observatory to see the magnificent Tanbo Art. However, I highly recommend that you bring cash so that you can buy locally-produced foods and processed goods in the direct sales market.

Tanbo Art Schedule

The Tanbo Art season starts from July to early September. You can visit any time of the day but it is highly recommended that you visit in the morning as the paddy fields do not have lights for night viewing. You can use the observation deck from mid-July until early September.

Why visit Tanbo Art?

Tanbo Art truly is a unique and fascinating form of art that is both beautiful and practical. It is a true testament to the creativity and innovation of the youth group of JA Taisetsu, and a must-see for anyone interested in art or agriculture. So, make sure to include a visit to Tanbo Art in Higashitakasu 7 Sen in your travel plans and experience the natural beauty of Hokkaido in a whole new way.
