10 Things to Do in Yubetsu

Yubetsu (湧別町) is a town in the Okhotsk Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The town's name is derived from the Yubetsu River which flows through the town. The river’s name was derived from the Ainu ipe-ot-i, which means fish, abundance, and place.

1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Yubetsu. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is commonly seen around town.

Kamiyubetsu Shrine 

2. Visit the Kamiyubetsu Shrine (上湧別神社). It was the main shrine of the former town of Kamiyubetsu before it merged with the town of Yubetsu. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you collect them.

Roadside Station Kamiyubetsu-onsen Tulip

4. Head to Roadside Station Kamiyubetsu-onsen Tulip (道の駅 かみゆうべつ温泉 チューリップの湯). This is the perfect place to rest from a long drive. You can also buy souvenirs here and eat at Restaurant Tulip (食事処 ちゅーりっぷ). If you’re collecting roadside station stamps for the Hokkaido Stamp Rally, then this place is a must-visit.

5. Visit Kamiyubetsu Railway Museum (中湧別駅記念館). It’s free. You will see the former Nakayubetsu Station with a restored Russell’s car. It is conveniently located in the vicinity of Roadside Station Kamiyubetsu-onsen Tulip.

6. Take a dip and relax at the onsen of Tulip no Yu (チューリップの湯). The day trip bath costs only 500 yen. It is conveniently located in Roadside Station Kamiyubetsu-onsen Tulip.

7. Head to Roadside Station Ai-Land (道の駅 愛ランド湧別). This is another perfect place to rest from a long drive along the coast of eastern Hokkaido. You can also buy souvenirs here and eat at Restaurant Saiko (レストラン彩湖). If you’re collecting roadside station stamps for the Hokkaido Stamp Rally, then this place is a must-visit.

Municipal Folk Museum Furusatokan JRY

8. Visit the Municipal Folk Museum Furusatokan JRY (町立郷土博物館 ふるさと館JRY) to learn about the history of the Tondenhei settlers who founded the town. There are also plenty of Show-era displays here that would show visitors life in the past.

Family Ai-land You

9. Bring your family or friends to Family Ai-land You (ファミリー愛ランドYOU) for a day of fun and adventures. There are numerous rides to try but if you want to simply relax and enjoy the view of Lake Saroma, then ride the Ferris Wheel. It costs 1600 yen for the ride-all-you-want ticket. Depending on the ride, you can also buy one-ride tickets for 100 – 300 yen.

Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park

10. Visit Kamiyubetsu Tulip Park (かみゆうべつチューリップ公園) during the Kamiyubetsu Tulip Festival held from May 1st to early June. You would surely be amazed at the picturesque sea of tulips.
