Although the deck can be accessed by car, it is important to note that the road is divided into uphill and downhill sections. However, the markings on the road surface are faint and there are no prominent signboards, so caution must be taken to avoid any accidents.

Upon reaching the top, visitors will find themselves in the presence of a lone pavilion, providing the perfect spot to sit and admire the stunning panorama of the lake. The front side of the pavilion offers an expansive view of the lake, while the back side overlooks the surrounding hills and forests, creating a harmonious blend of natural beauty.

Martyr Memorial Monument |
Adding to the serenity of the location, the Shumarinai Lake Observation Deck features a Martyr Memorial Monument (朱鞠内湖 殉職者慰霊塔). This memorial pays homage to those who have sacrificed their lives in service to their country. Additionally, visitors can find a statue of Hideharu Masutani (益谷秀治像), a notable figure who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Deputy Prime Minister. However, it should be noted that during a recent visit in 2023, the statue had fallen from its pedestal and was simply propped up, adding an unexpected element to the site.
View of Shumarinai Lake from the observation deck
Apart from these notable attractions, the main draw of the observation deck lies in its spectacular view of Shumarinai Lake and its surrounding islands. Visitors are treated to a panoramic vista, with the islands of Benten and Fujiwara dotting the tranquil waters of the lake. This enthralling sight is further enhanced during sunrise, making the observation deck one of the best spots to view the sunrise.
Team Nicerio visits the Shumarinai Lake Observation Deck
My family and I visited the Shumarinai Lake Observation Deck for the first time last September 25, 2022, the last day of our September 24-25 Road Trip. It was my 328th day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. It was our first destination for the day but also our last in Horokanai. The view from the observation deck was amazing. However, it is notable that the area needs improvement or some sort of maintenance. Some of the trees obstruct the view. Also, since the area can be reached by car, the signboards should be replaced or repainted to prevent accidents.
