Viva Alpaca Farm details

Viva Alpaca Farm, which first opened its doors to the public in October 2009, is a remarkable destination located in Kembuchi. The alpacas at Viva Alpaca Farm originally came from Nasu Big Farm in Peru and were warmly welcomed by the locals. The farm started with four alpacas - Brownie, Chopper, Cookie, and Orange - but has since expanded to accommodate nearly a dozen of these adorable creatures.

For those unfamiliar with alpacas, they are camelid animals native to the highlands of Peru, and South America, where they thrive in altitudes above 3,500 meters. Alpacas are primarily raised for their exquisite wool, which is sheared once a year. They possess teeth only on their lower jaws and have a preference for grass and moss as their dietary staples. Additionally, alpacas typically have a lifespan of 15 to 20 years.

During winter, although alpacas are known to be resilient to cold weather and fond of snow in Kembuchi, they are housed in the barns for their comfort. However, this does not mean that Viva Alpaca Farm closes its doors to visitors. The farm's staff graciously arranges guided visits for tourists to observe and interact with the alpacas within their barns.

Viva Alpaca Farm caters to both adults and children, providing an enchanting experience for all. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to purchase various products made from alpaca hair throughout the year. The farm's coffee shop, although open only on Saturdays and Sundays, offers a cozy ambiance and a delightful selection of refreshments.

During my family's road trip on September 25, 2022, which marked our final day in Kembuchi, we were fortunate enough to visit Viva Alpaca Farm for the first time. As an Assistant Language Teacher in the JET Programme, it was my 328th day in Japan, and this visit undoubtedly stood out as one of the highlights of our trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of feeding the incredibly cute alpacas on the farm, and my wife even developed a deep affection for Choco, expressing a desire to bring him home. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to visit Viva Alpaca Farm again in the future and relive this magical experience.

Update:

Orange, one of the first alpacas from Nasu Big Farm passed away last May 23, 2023.
