Abira (安平町) is a town in the Iburi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The place gets its name from the Ainu language. It is believed to have either been "ar-pira-pet" (pronounced arapirape in Japanese) which means surface of a cliff’s river or "ar-pira" (pronounced arapira in Japanese) which means one side of a cliff. Abira is an agricultural town known for its dairy cattle. It’s also known for its horse breeding industry.

1. Take a picture of the manhole covers of Abira. So far, I have seen 5 unique manhole covers. It is commonly seen around the town but 2 colored versions of these are displayed and also installed at the Abira Roadside Station grounds while three are displayed inside the Abira Town Hall.

2. Visit the Oiwake Hachiman Shrine (追分八幡神社). It’s one of the main shrines of the town of Abira. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

3. Visit the Hayakita Shrine (早来神社). It’s one of the main shrines of the town of Abira. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

4. Stroll around and enjoy nature at Abira Tokiwa Park (安平町ときわ公園). There is playground equipment here if you want to bring your kids. There is also a campsite within the park grounds if you want to stay for the night.

5. Take a dip at the onsen of Nukumorinoyu (ぬくもりの湯). It’s a public bath with nice indoor and outdoor baths. You’d be surprised that you would also see a botanical garden and a dinosaur fossil inside the facility.

6. Pitch a tent and stay overnight at Shika Park Camping Ground (鹿公園キャンプ場). It’s inside a vast park on the outskirts of town. There are several Ezo deer in an enclosure in the park so if you haven’t seen a real live one, then this is the place to see them up close.

7. Follow the walking trails and enjoy nature inside the vast Shika Park (鹿公園). As mentioned earlier, it has a campsite and also a deer enclosure that houses several Ezo deer. If you’re lucky, you would be able to see a fawn.

8. Dine and enjoy the food at Restaurant Miyamoto (レストランみやもと). The Camembert and soft cream here are a must-try.

10. Visit Abira Roadside Station, formally called Abira D51 Roadside Station (道の駅 あびらD51ステーション). Aside from the souvenir shop and the tourist information center, you’ll find the well-preserved D51 320 inside the Abira D51 Railway Museum and KiHa 183 locomotive on display on the roadside station grounds.
