10 Things to Do in Shinshinotsu
10 Things to Do in Shinshinotsu |
Shinshinotsu (新篠津村) is a village in the Ishikari Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. It is the smallest and only village in the subprefecture. Shinshinotsu was named after its mother village, Shinotsu Village (now part of Ebetsu City), which was named after the Ainu word "Sirinotsu," which means protruding chin.
For those planning to visit the village of Shinshinotsu to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Shinshinotsu:
Shinshinotsu manhole covers |
1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Shinshinotsu. So far, I have seen 2 unique manhole covers. They are commonly seen around the village.
Shinshinotsu Shrine |
2. Visit the Shinshinotsu Shrine (新篠津神社). It’s the main shrine of the village of Shinshinotsu. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.
Shinshinotsu Roadside Station |
3. Visit Shinshinotsu Roadside Station (道の駅 しんしのつ). It has a vast park and a nearby onsen worth checking out. If you collect roadside station stamps then this place is a must-visit.
Tappu Bridge |
4. Visit Tappu Bridge (たっぷ大橋) and enjoy the view of the Ishikari River and the farms of Shinshinotsu. To fully appreciate it, it’s best to cross it on foot or by bicycle.
Shinshinotsu Lake Shinotsu Minami Fishing Spot |
5. Try smelt fishing in winter at Shinshinotsu Lake Shinotsu Minami Fishing Spot (新篠津湖 しのつ南釣り場). It’s a great way to kill time while enjoying Hokkaido’s famed winter.
Shinotsu Park Camping Ground |
6. Pitch a tent and stay overnight at Shinotsu Park Camping Ground (しのつ公園 キャンプ場). It’s near the roadside station and its vast parking space. It’s also near the onsen so you can freshen up before calling it a day.
Tappunoyu Onsen |
7. Take a refreshing dip at the onsen of Tappunoyu Onsen (しんしのつ温泉 たっぷの湯). You may choose to avail of the day trip onsen (700 yen per adult) or stay overnight for a longer bathing experience. This onsen is inside the Shinshinotsu Roadside Station.
8. Attend the Shinshinotsu Lantern Festival. It is usually held on the 1st weekend of March at Shinotsu Park.
New Shinotsu Golf Course |
9. Play golf at New Shinotsu Golf Course (ニューしのつゴルフ場). It’s perfect for beginners and intermediate players. The golf course is also located near Ishikari River so it’s cooler during the summer.
Shinotsu Park |
10. Experience the expansive expanse of Shinotsu Park (しのつ公園) and revel in its generous open air. Whether you prefer solace and the refreshing breeze or wish to serenade your family or pets on a stroll, this park caters to all. Conveniently located near the roadside station, hot springs, and golf course, Shinotsu Park offers a plethora of recreational activities. When you pay a visit, make sure not to miss the opportunity to ascend the cake-shaped observation deck (しのつ公園展望台) nestled in the heart of the park and relish the breathtaking panoramic view it affords.
I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Shinshinotsu gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this small but beautiful village in the western part of Hokkaido.
