Chitose Roadside Station, formally called Salmon Park Chitose Roadside Station (道の駅サーモンパーク千歳) is one of the 128 roadside stations spread throughout the prefecture. It is located at 2 Chome-4-2 Hanasono in Chitose City in Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan.

Chitose Roadside Station / "Salmon Park Chitose" Roadside Station can be found along National Route 337, conveniently connecting Chitose City and Otaru City.

Each year, as salmon swim upstream into the crystal-clear Chitose River that surrounds the area, locals and tourists alike can experience the captivating sight of catching salmon using an Indian water wheel, a cherished autumn tradition in Chitose.

Moreover, its strategic location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the beauty of Hokkaido, as it is a mere 10-minute drive from New Chitose Airport and Chitose IC on the Hokkaido Expressway.

While they showcase numerous items from the Chitose area, there is also a selection of products harvested or crafted from various regions within Hokkaido.

My family and I visited Chitose Roadside Station for the first time last October 10, 2022, during our “October 8-10” Road Trip. It was my 343rd day in Japan as an ALT under the JET Programme. This roadside station was the last destination during our road trip. We wanted to visit other places but the weather wasn’t on our side. Regardless, we were able to get the roadside station stamp and also take a picture of the Chitose City colored manhole cover installed outside the roadside station.

It’s FREE to enter and explore Chitose Roadside Station. However, if you want to try out the food and buy souvenirs it’s better if you bring cash.

Chitose Roadside Station is open from 9 AM to 5 PM.


Why visit Chitose Roadside Station?

Chitose Roadside Station is a nice place to stop if you are driving along Route 337. Aside from the shops and restaurants in the roadside station, you can also visit the nearby Salmon Hometown Chitose Aquarium to get a better understanding of the lifecycle of the salmon that comes to the Chitose River. Aside from that you can see juvenile salmon in March, sea trout and cherry salmon in June, and salmon returning to spawn from late August through winter.


Getting to Chitose Roadside Station

 

From New Chitose Airport, walk to the Shin Chitose Kuko Kokunaisen 28 bus stop and ride the Shinsei [Chitoseshi] of the Ku 5 Shinsei Kuko Sen route bus of the Chuo Bus Company going to Shimizucho 6 Chome bus stop. 

From there, walk for about 1.1 kilometers going to Chitose Roadside Station. 

Travel time: 30 minutes

Fare: 230 yen

San Diego de Alcala Fortress - Quezon

Located in Gumaca in the province of Quezon, San Diego de Alcala Fortress is a historical Spanish structure that is recognized as a National Treasure by the National Historical Institute (NHI) since 1981.
