Day 356: October 23, 2022

Sunday - "10.22-23" Family Road Trip D2

It's the second day of our 10.22-23 Family Road Trip. We awoke to a chilly and wet morning here in Asahikawa City (旭川市).

To make matters worse, the weather forecast warns that it will rain all day. I had no option but to change our plans for the day. Thankfully, we went to Shirogane Blue Pond yesterday instead of today as planned.

That's why we decided to relax in our hotel room a little longer. We checked out of our hotel around 10 AM. From Toyoko Inn Asahikawa-eki Higashiguchi we visited Asahikawa Roadside Station so that Ella and I could get the roadside station stamp for the Hokkaido Roadside Station Stamp Rally.

After that, we went to the 2nd Street Asahikawa Toko shop and then the 2nd Street Nagayama Kanjo Shop so that my wife could go shopping for clothes.

Before leaving Asahikawa City, we had lunch at Yoshinoya along Route 39. It was one of our go-to restaurants in the Philippines. This made us reminisce about those times when we dreamed of going to Japan while eating.

From Asahikawa City, we then drove to the town of Chippubetsu (秩父別町) for some "Ella Time". Our first stop was Chippubetsu JR Station. I was expecting an eki stamp but turns out there were none so we proceeded to the Chippubetsu Roadside Station so that Ella and I could get the roadside station stamp for the Hokkaido Roadside Station Stamp Rally.

After getting the stamp, I made a quick visit to the nearby Chippubetsu Centennial Memorial Tower to get a bird's eye view of the town.

From there, we walked to Kid's Square Chikkuru for the "Ella Time" that we promised our daughter.

Ella and I played at Kid's Square Chikkuru until it closed at 6 PM It was enjoyable playing with Ella because it reminded me of my carefree childhood and the joy I felt before the stress of adulthood slammed me hard in the face. We arrived home at 8 PM, officially ending our "10.22-23" Family Road Trip.

Overall, it's a Sunday well spent. Although it was sunny, we were able to still visit several 2nd Street branches in Asahikawa City and also have some "Ella Time" at Chippubetsu. We're all looking forward to the next weekend as it's a special day for the family as we will celebrate my wife's birthday. See you guys!

Sombrero Island - Batangas

Found off the coast of Anilao in Mabini, in the province of Batangas, Sombrero Island is a small island that is slowly making a name for itself. Sombrero Island Sombrero Island details Sombrero Island got its name from the Filipino word  sombrero  which means hat. It is quite obvious that the island was named due to its unique shape, which according to locals, looks like a giant hat that sticks out from the sea. (travel time varies depending on how rough the waves are) We rented a boat to bring us to Sombrero Island .  A gentlewoman is always needed in a group. The boat rental usually costs around P2,500. Our adventure today takes us about 483 km northwest of kilometer 0 in Manila. My blog today is quite special since I would talk about not one but three notable places in Ilocos Norte. Unlike in my previous blog  Ilocos Sur Adventure: Vigan City  where we came a bit unprepared by not contacting a guide firsthand. Our adventure today takes us about 70 kilometers south of Km 0 in Manila. Taal is known as the Balisong and Barong Tagalog Capital of the Philippines . Aside from balisongs (butterfly knives) and Barong Tagalog, Taal is also known as the home of Taal Basilica , the largest church in Asia.  Taal Taal Details The name  taal  means  "indigenous"  because of the Bornean settlers who established the first settlement in the area. Our adventure today takes us to the highest peak of Luzon. Mt. Pulag is located in the provinces of Benguet with parts found in Ifugao, and Nueva Viscaya. Overall Mt. Pulag is the third highest peak in the Philippines. Mt. Pulag The name Pulag was the improved name for pulog , the old name of the mountain, which means bare. Hiking Pico de Loro

Our adventure today takes us to the highest point in the province of Cavite. Pico de Loro is located in the town of Maragondon with some parts found within the boundary of Batangas province. The mountain was named by the Spanish sailors who once passed by the coast of Cavite on their way to Manila Bay. They named the mountain Pico de Loro which means Parrot's Peak because of the striking similarity of the rock tower found on the peak to that of a giant parrot perched on the forested mountaintop.  Me at the jump-off point I'm proud to say that Pico de Loro was the first mountain that I have conquered. Though I couldn't say that my first climb was perfect (due to some blunders that happened and the rainy weather) I could still say that I enjoyed it and it instilled in me my adventurer spirit.
