10 Things to Do in Iwamizawa City |
Iwamizawa (岩見沢市) is an inland city located in the Sorachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. The name "Iwamizawa" is derived from the Japanese word "Yuamisawa" (浴澤). Yuami (浴) and Sawa (澤) mean "bathing" and "a swamp".
For those planning to visit the city to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Iwamizawa City:
Iwamizawa City manhole cover |
1. Take a picture of the manhole cover of Iwamizawa City. So far, I have seen 1 unique manhole cover. It is commonly seen around the city.
Iwamizawa Shrine |
2. Visit the Iwamizawa Shrine (岩見澤神社). It’s the main shrine of Iwamizawa City. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.
Mannenji |
3. Drive into the eastern outskirts of Iwamizawa City and visit Mannenji (万念寺). It might not have a grand infrastructure but it is home to the haunted Okiku doll that is said to house the spirit of a dead girl. This doll’s hair continues to grow and is regularly trimmed by the monks of the temple. However, photography of the doll isn’t allowed.
Minami Park |
4. Visit and stroll around Minami Park (みなみ公園) in the heart of the city and take photos of the preserved D5147 and C57144 steam engines.
Hosui Winery |
5. Try the wine and the soft cream of Hosui Winery (㈱宝水ワイナリー). If you visit around September to October you might see the vineyard full of grapes. This winery is also one of the filming locations of the 2014 Japanese film A Drop of the Grapevine (ぶどうのなみだ) starring You Oizumi, Shota Sometani, and Yuko Ando.
Kitamura Onsen Hotel |
6. Take a relaxing dip at the onsen of Kitamura Onsen Hotel (北村温泉ホテル). You may choose to stay overnight or use the one-day onsen facility. There is also a free-to-use foot bath at the parking area. Aside from that, there is a restaurant inside the hotel that offers a variety of Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes.
Kitamura Park Fureai Hiroba Camping Ground |
7. Pitch a tent and stay overnight at Kitamura Park Fureai Hiroba Camping Ground (北村中央公園 ふれあい広場 キャンプ場). This campsite is near an onsen place and a scenic pond. Heads up, this place can easily get crowded during the camping season as it is easy to access.
Iwamizawa Onsen Nagomi |
8. Take a relaxing dip at the onsen of Iwamizawa Onsen Nagomi (湯元岩見沢温泉なごみ). It’s a one-day onsen facility. The bathing fee is very affordable. It’s one of the go-to spots for locals if they want to bathe and relax. It is conveniently located along Route 234.
Haginoyama Citizen’s Ski Resort |
9. Ski at Haginoyama Citizen’s Ski Resort (岩見沢萩の山市民スキー場). It has a beginner’s area and also a steep part for experienced skiers. It has a lift and on a clear day, you will see a beautiful view of the mountains of Kurisawacho Miyamura(栗沢町宮村) area.
Hokkaido Greenland |
10. Enjoy the retro carnival rides at Hokkaido Greenland (北海道グリーンランド). This amusement park has several rides worth trying. The Ferris Wheel is a tourist favorite as it has an amazing panoramic view of Iwamizawa City especially on a clear day.
I hope my list of the 10 Things to Do in Iwamizawa City gave you an idea and inspiration to visit this scenic city in the Sorachi Subprefecture of Hokkaido.
