5 Things to Do in Ujina Island

Ujina (宇品島) is a small island that is part of the Minami Ward of Hiroshima City in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It is connected to the mainland by the Akatsuki Bridge. The kanji used for its name u (宇) means eaves, roof, house, and heaven, and shina (品) means goods. 

For those planning to visit the island to check what it has to offer, here are the 5 Things to Do in Ujina Island:

1. Learn about the different geological features of the island while strolling at its southern tip. You will see several wooden “information poles” installed by the Earth Museum Motoujina. It is both in Japanese and English.

2. Relax and spend some quiet time at Motoujina Beach (鉢ヶ谷の浜). Aside from the beautiful scenery enjoy listening to the sound of the waves as it gently kisses the sand of the beach.

3. Stroll around Motoujina Park (元宇品公園). You may choose to follow the beach path the inland path or maybe both. Don’t forget to visit the Ujina Lighthouse (宇品灯台).

4. Ride the high-speed boat from Grand Prince Hotel Ferry Dock (グランドプリンスホテル前桟橋) to Miyajima Island. You can buy tickets at the front desk of Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima. Aside from Miyajima Island, the high-speed ferry also has trips to Etajima and Kure Port. 



5. Check-in and relax in one of the cozy rooms of Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima (グランドプリンスホテル広島). It is the tallest structure on the island and has an amazing view of Hiroshima Bay and the nearby islands of Ninoshima and Etajima. The food in the hotel is also delicious and you can choose from several restaurants that specialize in different cuisines. If you want to enjoy the view while eating then dine at Sky Lounge Top of Hiroshima.

Kokawadera Revisited 2023

The first time that we visited Kokawadera ( 粉河寺 ) was during the 14th day of our 2014-2015 Japan Trip which was actually during the 1st of January. Our main reason when we visited the temple was to accompany our Japanese family on their religious obligations during the Japanese New Year. This is called hatsumode .  Kokawadera Revisited 2023 Hatsumode is the Japanese tradition of visiting a shrine or temple for the first time in the New Year.
