Hiroshima (広島市) is the capital city of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. Hiroshima City was founded in 1589 and became a city in 1889. The city is historically known for being the first target of the atomic bomb. The kanji used for its name hiro () means wide and shima () means island. 

For those planning to visit the city to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Hiroshima City:

1. Take a picture of the manhole covers of Hiroshima City. So far, I have seen 2 unique manhole covers. Both are common around the city.

2. Visit the Hiroshima Toshogu Shrine (広島東照宮). It’s one of the most popular shrines in Hiroshima City. It is a 17th-century shrine that is surrounded by nature which makes it a place to visit if you want to find a quiet place in the city. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

3. Visit the Hiroshima Gokoku Shrine (広島護国神社). It’s also one of the most popular shrines in Hiroshima City.  This shrine was rebuilt in 1965 and is a popular destination for hatsumode. It’s also inside the Hiroshima Castle grounds so you can visit both conveniently. You can pay your respects and offer prayers here any time of the day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you are collecting them.

4. Visit Mitakidera (三瀧寺). This temple is a popular autumn leaves viewing destination for many. You can also see the Komagataki waterfall and Yumyo-no-Taki waterfall in the shrine area.

5. Try the Hiroshima Okonomiyaki. Numerous restaurants in Hiroshima offer this. The oldest of which is Momotarou (桃太郎).

6.  Admire the artworks at Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art (広島市現代美術館) or simply Hiroshima MOCA. There are plenty of art exhibits here worth checking out.

7. Visit Hiroshima Castle (広島城). This beautiful castle is now a museum. Like most castles, the top floor is an observation room which offers an amazing view of the city.

8.  Stroll around the Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園). It is a park dedicated to the victims of the atomic bomb. Don’t forget to offer some prayers at the Hiroshima Victims Memorial Cenotaph.

9. Visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum (広島平和記念資料館) and learn about the history of the city and the lives of the people who experienced the horrors of the war and the devastation caused by the atomic weapon.

10. Visit the Atomic Bomb Dome (原爆ドーム). It was once the Industrial Promotion Hall which was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945. Now, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
