Imabari (今治市) is the second largest city in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. Imabari City was established as a town in 1889 and became a city in 1920 after merging with the village of Hiyoshi. The city has several ship-building facilities along its northern and eastern coastlines. The kanji used for its name ima () means now and bari/chi () means peace or rule. 

For those planning to visit the city to check what it has to offer, here are the 10 Things to Do in Imabari City:

1. Take a picture of the manhole covers of Imabari City. So far, I have seen 2 unique manhole covers. They are common around the city.

2. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables at Saisai Kiteya (さいさいきて屋). You can also eat in the restaurant and café of this market. 


Taisanji (泰山寺)

3. Visit Taisanji (泰山寺). It is temple #55 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you collect them.


Senyuji (仙遊寺)

4. Visit Senyuji (仙遊寺). It is temple #58 of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. You can make an arrangement and stay here overnight to experience living in a temple for a day. Don’t forget to avail of the shrine’s goshuin if you collect them.

5. Stroll around Odagahama Beach (織田ヶ浜海水浴場). Although this place is near the city center, it is surprisingly clean. It’s a good place to spend the afternoon or early mornings.

6.  Pitch a tent and stay overnight at Kamoikekaigan Park (鴨池海岸公園). In the summer, you can swim and enjoy the beach.

7. Visit the Towel Museum (タオル美術館) and learn about how the high-quality towels of Japan are made. There are colorful exhibits here that are worth seeing. There is also a cafe here offering delicious coffee you could enjoy while relaxing inside or outside the store. Before leaving, don’t forget to buy some towels as souvenirs.

8.  Enjoy the scenic view from Kurushima Strait Observatory (来島海峡展望館). There is a visitor center with a café and a souvenir shop worth checking out too.

9. Visit the Imabari Castle (今治城). You can explore the castle grounds for free or pay to enter the keep. The castle is kept double as a museum and an observatory. You will get a nice panoramic view of the city from its observation platform.

10. Do the Shimanami Kaido Cycling Tour. It is named after Nishiseto Expressway which is popularly called Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道). You can start from Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture and vice versa. Depending on your pace, you may be able to finish this 70-kilometer cycling route in one to two days. This cycling route is one of the most scenic in Japan.
