In the wake of the Battle of Sekigahara, Imabari Castle witnessed a new era under the stewardship of Tokugawa Ieyasu's general, Tōdō Takatora. Recognized for his architectural acumen, Tōdō embarked on the ambitious task of building a new stronghold that would stand as a testament to his strategic vision. Thus, in 1608, Imabari Castle emerged from the rugged coastlines, boasting three concentric enclosures surrounded by water moats, a testament to the ingenuity of its designer.

Team Nicerio visits Imabari Castle
My family and I first visited Imabari Castle last December 27, 2022, during our 3-day Hiroshima Road Trip with our Japanese family. This trip marked my 421st day in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in the JET Programme. Imabari Castle was the only castle that we visited during our road trip. As an avid fan of Japanese history and architecture, I enjoyed exploring the castle grounds and the keep which also serves as a museum. There was a lot to see and learn in and outside the castle.
