Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street (宮島表参道商店街) is a street lined up with numerous souvenir shops and restaurants. It is located on the island of Miyajima in Hatsukaichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan.

The Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street, spanning approximately 350 meters, boasts a diverse array of around 60 establishments, ranging from quaint souvenir shops to bustling restaurants. Among these, more than 10 stores specialize in Momiji Manju, a beloved confectionary synonymous with Hiroshima's culinary heritage.

Momiji Manju, sweet cakes traditionally filled with red bean paste and shaped like maple leaves, trace their origins to Miyajima in the early 20th century. Symbolizing Momijidani, a picturesque locale renowned for its maple foliage, these treats offer a delightful taste of local tradition. Beyond the classic red bean filling, Momiji Manju tantalizes taste buds with variations such as custard, chocolate, green tea, white beans, cheese, and more.

Adding to the culinary delights of the street is the "anago chikuwa," a grilled conger eel fish paste served on a tube, traditionally bamboo but now commonly made of cardboard.

My family and I first visited Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street last December 26, 2022, during our 3-day Hiroshima Road Trip with our Japanese family. This trip marked my 420th day in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) in the JET Programme. It was our last stop before leaving the island. Had we not had other places to go to, I would have visited all the stores to check out what they offered. Regardless, our short visit to Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street was productive as we could see numerous unique products and food, most of which, we have seen only for the first time.

It’s FREE to enter and explore Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street. However, it would be better to bring money just in case you wish to buy some unique souvenirs or try the famed momiji manju of Miyajima.

Why visit Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street

Before leaving Miyajima Island, It’s best to bring home a souvenir from your visit. The best place to buy souvenirs is in Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street. With its numerous stores, you would surely find something that you would fancy. There are also several food stores in the shopping street selling various delicacies. It’s also a great experience to try at least one of the unique foods of the island. 

Getting to Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street

 

From JR Hiroshima Station ride the Sanyo Honsen Line going to JR Miyajimaguchi Station. From there, walk to the ferry port and ride the ferry going to Miyajimaguchi Port. Once there, walk for about 1.1 kilometers going to Senjokaku Pavilion. 

Fare Miyajima Ferry (One-way trip): Adult 200 yen / Child 100 yen

Fare Miyajima Ferry (Round trip): Adult 400 yen / Child 200 yen

For guests staying at the Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima on Ujina Island, there's the option to utilize the hotel's high-speed ferry service.

One-way fare:

Adult: 2,100 yen

Child: 1,050 yen

Alternatively, you can take advantage of the one-day passport, granting access to board the high-speed ferry between Miyajima Island and the Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima Dock:

Adult: 3,800 yen
