Despite its modest size, this island supports a population of roughly 600 to 700 residents and boasts essential amenities including a nursery, elementary, and technical school, alongside a post office and hospital. Positioned on the southeastern edge, the imposing Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima stands as a prominent feature, complete with its dock facilitating high-speed tour boats for guests, offering journeys to destinations such as Kure Port, Etajima, and the renowned Itsukushima/Miyajima Island.

While the island may not offer an abundance of activities, locals often gravitate towards its southern tip for tranquil strolls along the coastline or opt to unwind at Motoujina Beach, seeking respite from the urban hustle and bustle.

My family and I stayed at Grand Prince Hotel Hiroshima on Ujina Island from December 25 to 27 during our 3-day Hiroshima Road Trip with our Japanese family. This trip marked my 419th, 420th, and 421st days in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) participating in the JET Programme. Like always, I took the opportunity to go on an early morning stroll around Ujina Island and explored its forested Motoujina Park. Although I was only able to explore the island during the mornings, the 3-day stay on the island was more than enough to see its highlights.
